Our Manifesto

At Filament, we are changing every meeting.

We believe meetings are the connective tissue of modern business: they are how (and where, and why) we interact with our peers, solve thorny problems, think creatively and get stuff done.

When organizations have terrible meetings, their work suffers, business slows and morale weakens.

Because we believe everyone deserves freaking great meetings, here are our eight promises to you:

1. To Inspire:  We will do different things better, and inspire others to bring that "different" from Filament into their work and their home. Your time at Filament will be the most inspirational and interesting thing you've done in a long time.

2. To Connect:  We will connect people with one another and with their own creativity.  The people you connect with at our events will be the most interesting people you'll meet all month, and they'll be different from the people you'll meet anywhere else.

3. To Include:  We value people for who they are and the perspectives they bring. We believe meetings are best when we leverage our differences to create common good.  We are building a safe space for diversity, not divisiveness

4. To Teach:  Filament is the place for you to learn things you can't learn elsewhere.  Our curriculum will be at once creative and crucial.  We will deliver important things you crave to know in a format you've never experienced.

5. To Build:  We will build stuff all the time. We will constantly create, write, draw, facilitate, design and practice.  Our creative output is what makes Filament the best place to meet because our tools, games, pictures, agendas and methodologies look better, feel better and -- above all -- work better.

6. To Simplify:  We know your time and attention are at once both valuable and expensive. We will build things simply, and we will refuse to take more of your time than necessary -- even when you are willing to give it.  Above all, we will make using Filament as easy as possible.

7. To Give:  We will give away the things we uncover, never choosing commerce over collaboration.  By sharing our best work, we become curators of a community of amazing practitioners who will, in turn, give their best work back.   The money will flow from our giving, but never guide it.

8. To Belong:  We will become a great citizen of our city, becoming an indispensable place for the people who care to do work that matters.  We will make it unbelievably easy for non-profits and change-makers to use Filament as a tool to make the city better.

The Meeting Code

Instead of watching another speaker read their slides, at Filament you'll work with your peers, gain insights, share knowledge and (gasp) actually have fun -- all while achieving measurable results that will last long after your meeting is over.

Our meetings are built for the way people really learn. Here are just a few of the things that make Filament meetings better.

CONVERSATIONS NOT PRESENTATIONS

Most meetings reward presence without participation. Sitting in a dim conference room suffering yet another death by PowerPoint doesn't get things done. At Filament, everyone (introvert and extrovert, expert and novice) works together to connect, uncover unique insights and solve problems.

BUILT FOR INTROVERTS

We know that to many introverts, things like brainstorming and networking are painfully uncomfortable. We've designed our meetings to include purposeful silence, time to think and casual small-group discussions. But it isn't just introverts who love our meetings -- extroverts finally hear all the great ideas traditional formats fail to uncover.

PEERS NOT EXPERTS

At most traditional conferences, the most important person in the room aren't the speakers, but rather those sitting next to you. At Filament, we leverage the wisdom of the crowd to drive collaboration, connection and creativity.

IN PERSON NOT ONLINE

Amazing things happen when people are face-to-face. The connection and creativity Filament meetings deliver don't translate to virtual attendees. Thusly, we refuse to dial back the experience of the people who are "in the room" to accommodate those who couldn't attend.

FLEXIBILITY NOT FORMALITY

At Filament, our meetings are built around people doing stuff together. We give attendees the permission to talk about what matters -- and sometimes our clients find that the challenges people uncover in the moment are more significant than the ones we originally came to discuss. Our process allows us to pivot and focus on solving the most meaningful challenges, not just the ones we planned for.

DRAWING BY DESIGN

When you come to Filament, you'll see our designers at the whiteboards sketching. We don't do it because it's cool or fun (though it is), but because it makes our meetings better. Live drawing engages attendees and helps everyone literally get onto the same page. It also creates a written "artifact" of what occurred that is useful long after the meeting is over.

THINKING TOGETHER BEATS DRINKING TOGETHER

At so many conferences, the "networking" only occurs at the end of the day, with attendees holding a beer in one hand and a stack of business cards in the other. At Filament, conversation happens from the first minute to the last and you'll make more meaningful connections in a day of thinking than you ever could in two hours of drinking.
